Celebratory ribbon cutting ceremony held to commemorate project and thank the community whose support made this project possible
Uncommon Schools, a nonprofit organization that starts and manages outstanding urban charter public schools, is proud to announce the completion of North Star Academy College Preparatory High School’s brand new, 52,000 square foot facility. A celebratory ribbon cutting ceremony was held on Friday October 14, 2011 to commemorate this project and thank the generous, committed community whose support made this project possible. Located in downtown Newark, the new facility provides North Star with 24 additional classroom spaces, two science labs, a full-size gymnasium, a multi-purpose room, administrative spaces, 13 covered parking spaces, and a roof-top play area. Most importantly, the facility enables North Star to expand its high school enrollment from 160 students in 2009-10 to over 600 students over the next few years.
North Star was honored to have Mayor Booker speak at the ribbon cutting. “Today I am proud to celebrate the opening of a cathedral of learning…This school is a shining star of hope and a guiding light. It stands for freedom of choice... North Star Academy is what urban education and American schools should be about,” Mayor Booker said at the ribbon cutting. After the ceremony, the Mayor joined a student-led tour.
In 2011, North Star continued its record of high achievement with 100% of 11th grade students scoring Advanced or Proficient on the 2011 New Jersey High School Proficiency Assessment in both Math and English Language Arts. Further, 100% of the school’s 2011 graduates gained acceptance into 4-year colleges. North Star accepts students by random, public lottery and is free and open to all families living in New Jersey. North Star currently serves approximately 1,600 students in grades K–12, 98% of whom are Black or Latino and 77% of whom qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Ultimately, North Star will grow to serve 5,000 students across 14 schools.
